WANDERLUST PORTFOLIO

Sam Lax

Self-Shooting Producer, Director, Photographer and Editor

I have over 10 years’ experience creating travel, documentary and digital content for the BBC, Yahoo Australia and global brands. Experienced working independently on location, I specialise in uncovering human stories that connect audiences to people, culture and place.

Travel & Destination Storytelling

Produced a series of travel films in partnership with Tourism Tasmania, uncovering quirky experiences, local culture and lesser-known reasons to visit Tasmania during winter.

Creator of Yahoo Australia's 'Ever Wondered?' series, a travel and culture format designed to explore destinations through the people and stories behind them. Episodes ranged from Sydney Fish Market to a family-run truffle farm and independent brewery, uncovering local characters, traditions and industries often missed by visitors.

Independent Travel Storytelling

Produced, filmed and edited during a two-month journey through India, this film formed part of a wider creative project exploring the country through photography, audio interviews and documentary-style storytelling. The experience offered an opportunity to connect with local people, culture and place beyond the typical tourist perspective.

A self-initiated travel film showcasing solo production, location-based storytelling and 360 video capture. Created while travelling through Sri Lanka, the project combines cultural exploration, adventure and immersive filmmaking techniques to bring viewers closer to the experience of place.

Documentary Storytelling

Episode 1 of a four-part international BBC documentary series that I conceived, produced and directed, following athletes in Wales, Canada, Kenya and India whose lives are deeply connected to the natural world. Alongside producing the series and overseeing international contributors and crews, I shot and edited the Wales episode, creating the editorial and visual benchmark for the films that followed.

Social Video, Studio Production & Audience Growth

As Producer, Director and Director of Photography, I led the creative and technical delivery of this studio-based shoot supporting the launch of The Night Manager Season 2. Responsible for lighting, camera direction, editorial development and talent direction, I delivered a suite of platform-native content across TikTok, YouTube and partner channels while coordinating the requirements of multiple stakeholders.

As Director, Director of Photography and Editor, I led the creative delivery of this BBC Three social campaign, overseeing on-location filming, talent direction and post-production. Created for digital audiences, the film demonstrates platform-native storytelling, audience engagement and multi-skilled content production from shoot through to final delivery.

Still Photography

Photography was my first creative passion. Inspired by my dad and later shaped by the creative constraints of Instagram's early years, I developed a habit of documenting the people, places and cultures I encountered through travel. Through years of exploring the world—from seven months of solo travel before university to a two-month journey through India—it taught me to slow down, observe and look for stories in people and places. Today, photography remains at the heart of how I explore the world and approach storytelling.
